34-year-old Joseph Springer Ericsson robbed Chase Bank at 3600 South Bristol Street in Santa Ana on Thursday morning. His getaway car? The OCTA public bus.
The parolee walked into the bank and passed a note to the teller, Cpl. Anthony Bertagna of the Santa Ana Police Department told The Orange County Register. The teller gave Ericsson the money and started to leave.
Witnesses said the suspect got to the exit with the money, but turned around and gave it back to someone inside the bank and fled. Nearby, an OCTA bus was at a bus stop on Bristol Street south of MacArthur Boulevard and the man got on it as it headed south.
A sheriff’s department helicopter was on its way to the robbery and ended up following the bus. At the Bristol and Baker bus stop, police entered the bus and took the man into custody without incident. He was arrested on suspicion of bank robbery.
