This burger, stuffed with lobster, fried shrimp and cheese, should be on your list. 


For decades, college students had to pick between the dining hall and on-campus food court, both serving subpar food. Still the case at UC Irvine, but at least students have an alternative.

Just across the street from the campus, the University Town Center is a mecca of solid dining options for college students, including Mendocino Farms, Eureka! and Tender Greens.

And the options keep expanding. Last July, Slapfish opened its doors to its fourth SoCal location at the UTC in Irvine, replacing Berkeley Dog.

Slapfish has a relatively tame menu of fish tacos and lobster rolls. PSSSST…they’re a franchise now, afterall! But take a close look at the menu board, you’ll find a rotating list of specials.

There’s the Power Burrito, which is a salmon burrito packed with extra vegetables. That’s what I had ordered. But the staff made a mistake on my order and brought me out an Anteater Burger instead. A blessing in disguise.

The burger was juicy, stuffed with fried shrimp, melted cheese, tomato…and lobster. Yes, there’s lobster in the burger. The x-factor here is its speciality “Jersey Sauce,” a tangy, citrus garlic herb aioli. There’s ton of it on the burger and used the runoff to dip my fries.

Maybe I should try recreate Chef Andrew Gruel’s “accident” next time I’m in.
