In a move likely intended to throw shade at Taco Bell, Del Taco has added chorizo to its breakfast menu.

Del Taco’s chorizo will be made from ground pork, seasoned with the restaurant’s spicy blend of herbs and spices. The new option will be grilled fresh in store and offered in three new breakfast items, including the Chorizo Breakfast Taco, the Chorizo Half Pounder Burrito and the Epic Chorizo Scrambler Burrito.

The Chorizo Breakfast Taco will feature chorizo and scrambled eggs, topped with cheddar cheese in a warm flour tortilla. The Chorizo Half Pounder Burrito will have chorizoscrambled eggs, cheddar cheese and red sauce served in a warm flour tortilla. And the Epic Chorizo Scrambler Burrito will have chorizoscrambled eggs, cheddar cheese, hash browns, pico de gallo and red sauce served in an oversized flour tortilla.

This comes after McDonald’s locations in Orange County started serving a Chorizo Breakfast Bowl, which features eggs, chorizo, cheese, pico de gallo and a hash brown.

Absent from the chorizo party is Taco Bell, which tested chorizo in select markets in 2015, but never went ahead nationally with the experiment. How about a Breakfast Quesalupa instead, my friend? 

So, does this mean chorizo is officially in? And when will tortas get their time in the limelight in the U.S. foodie scene? Only time will tell…
