Watch This Whale Give Birth Next To A Whale Watching Boat
The birth, which happened off the coast of Dana point, is a a truly magnificent sight.
Whale watchers in Dana Point were treated to the surprise of a lifetime Saturday as a false killer whale gave birth next to their boat. Tom Southern, the boat’s captain, recounted the amazing tale to the Orange County Register in what may be one of the coolest things to happen during a whale watching cruise.
Southern said a pod of female false killer whales approached the boat and begun pushing against it as a “spurt of blood” that appeared in the water. He then witnessed a 2 1/2 feet-long baby whale was born. The female whales helped the little one stay afloat for about 10 minutes before it started swimming on its own, Southern said.
Boats from all over the area gathered after Southern spread the word about the whale’s birth. For most, it was the first time seeing such an exciting moment during a whale watching cruise. Part of the excitement was seeing this particular breed of whale off the coast of Dana Point, as these animals tend to live in more tropical waters. These whales look like large dolphins, but do share characteristics of killer whales. Southern said he’s only seen false killer whales twice in his 15 years of experience on the water.
What’s the coolest thing you’ve seen while on a whale watching cruise in Orange County?
